Apparently there’s a fifty year old woman begging in the NY Times for men to be men again: Men, Where Have You Gone? Please Come Back. Happily, I never stopped being one. I was lucky to live my life in years of relatively positive relations between the sexes in Canada (up until 1990) and the rest of my life in places where they still are. I am somewhat intrigued by the idea that men have checked out. YouTube videos document the current Tinder, promiscuity, cupidity chaos well. Rachel Drucker’s a bit late to the party. Or she’s been living the party and only waking up now, amid the empty bottles and broken promises.

Forty-something Brandon Smith (about half a generation younger than me) decided to take on Rachel’s arguments head-on.

I can still explain for the NYT why men are walking away if they’re willing to listen.

Larry Clark likes to make movies which shock. Particularly about teenagers. They fuck and swear and sometimes kill (Bully). On the other hand, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is on the reading list in most English language high schools around the world. Nothing Larry Clark has done can outdo the horror of those kids on an island.

Homo sapiens are a brutal and savage species, probably responsible for the elimination of Neanderthal man and since then we have sent thousands of species into extinction, from mammoths, to bison, to the dodo. If there’s a bad animal around, we’re it.

Clark like Golding is busy with representing the what is, ripping off of your rose-coloured glasses and then stomping on them to boot. Yes, your girlfriend in high school betrayed you.

We begin in a prison cell with metal walls. There are flashing lights which recall something from the film the Matrix. It’s good to see a choreographic production challenging (if in miniature) the opera productions and the main stage theatre productions in production design. Great to get away from the empty black room at last. Fantastic work from production designer Penelope Wehrli.

Ismail Ivo is naked in a blanket, bare naked. The bottom of his feet are painted red, reminding us all that he and we are made of blood.
