I’m sorry if what I’ve written offends you. It’s not meant to.

You are not the only former étoile to get into trouble with Giselle. I think I put you in pretty good company, with Ludmila Semenyaka and Ekaterina Maksimova. Giselle is a particular role, not suited to a more mature dancer. The remarks are not personal but general. It could apply to almost any other dancer taking on this role past her early thirties.

The artistic directors and opera house direction are as much to blame for this as the dancers. Dancers should be given suitable roles.

We just had the inverse happen here in Vienna. A twenty one year old dancing Anna Karenina does not convince in the way a mature dancer (over thirty) with a bit of life experience would. Dagmer Kronberger was apparently far more moving in the title role than Olga Yesina.

In fairness, I should mention you do have your fans for your interpretation of Giselle. Someone about three months ago was talking to me about how much they appreciated having a dancer of your stature in Vienna and specifically mentioned your Giselle.

A few years have passed since that performance and since I wrote the above. And generally getting older is not one of the highlights of life. I hadn’t really noticed before. But now I do. Sorry about that. I would change it if I could. For both of us.

Best wishes from Vienna.

What right do you have to be vindictively rude about not only someone’s art form but their age and artistry. You do not even write your name to the article. Opinions and tastes are varied, however your words last the test of time and this rudeness is tasteless and untalented writing.
